The French colonial model: history and culture
Francophone cultural regions: geography
Francophone cultural regions: identity
Examining “la francophonie” closely is also a way of discovering different geographical areas where the imprint of France has developed into so many original cultural entities. We shall take students on a substantial survey of “la francophonie”.
The crisis in the French universalist model
High culture and popular culture
The structures for a cultural presence
Perspectives on francophone globalization
It is often said: France today is slipping backwards regarding the dissemination of her culture across the world. We shall investigate different aspects of this retreat, looking for its causes. We shall also see that it has to be relativized, since a presence persists in spite of everything, proof of the vqalidity of a model acting as a counterweight to the American cultural superpower. Between geopolitical challenges to French influence in the world and the economic realities of cultural dissemination, we shall investigate with students whether the current system and vision are up to the issues involved. Moreover, is cultural dissemination a simple question of influence?
In Europe: French-speaking Switzerland and Belgium
France in America: Québec and the West Indies
In Africa: signs of the Empire
First of all, we shall retrace the historical origins of “la francophonie” via French colonial presence overseas. So as to understand, in short, how this factual and institutional reality was forged: the historic role of France is also a model for the spread of her culture.
“La francophonie” is a reality. It represents France’s past colonial empire, spread across the world, as testified by the extent of the regions where the French language is used. From this international presence, does France benefit in terms of cultural influence? We shall examine the question, looking at the cultural zones of “la francophonie” and their links with France. A way for students of realizing that France is not limited to the Hexagon.
