© 2011 IFUPE (Institut de Formation Universitaire Pour Etudiants étrangers, Paris). Etablissement privé d'enseignement supérieur.
To fulfill this aim, we have devised courses which are varied, precise and open to new technology but at the same time individualized by tutorials. The following sections show the teaching proposed by the Institute, further details being given subsequently under the relevant heading :
The IFUPE is a private teaching institution offering courses specifically designed for foreign students living in Paris wishing to learn more about French culture and society and to improve their command of French. Responding to several needs with respect to levels of linguistic mastery and initiation into various facets of culture (history, literature, arts), our institute is aimed at any foreign student about to embark on a university course in France who wishes to acquire the basis of a solid general culture before specializing in a particular area, and to angle the work towards that specialization. We also offer foreign students personalized help both through administrative procedures and in intellectual guidance.
For further details on the functioning of the Institute and the courses given, consult the rubrics Teaching and Syllabus; for everything to do with the organization of the study sessions and enrolment, see Timetable and Enrolment.
In line with the personalized monitoring that we offer each student, a certificate of regular attendance at the Institute course (both teaching and extramural modules) is awarded. This certificate can be used for the next stage of students’ university courses: the IFUPE is a recognized teaching establishment, and the certificate it delivers consequently guarantees the attainment of the best standard of general knowledge of French culture. The acquisition of this standard will facilitate and prepare for adaptation to the university courses on which students plan to embark for the continuation of their studies in France.
8 teaching modules given at the Institute itself covering different areas of general culture (history of France, institutions, literary history, sociology, fine arts, music, theatre), as well as the teaching of French as a foreign language. The plan is to provide access to the broad sweep of French culture, to its principal events and its relevance to the present. Students will receive regular handouts summerizing course work and listing additional material exclusively available on the Institute website
5 extramural cultural modules: For each group of students, every week or fortnight (according to the planned timetable), our theoretical teaching is complemented by a whole series of extramural cultural modules directly related to the different categories of the course work presented by the Institute. There will be guided visits, accompanied by specialists, to Paris museums; the discovery of historical sites in the capital; and visits to shows (theatre, concerts) as well as other events such as special lectures. All of these will be entirely free for students enrolled at the Institute from the beginning of the session : since these activities are considered integral to the course there is no extra charge for these extramural cultural modules.
The technological dimension: We are intent on supporting our courses with video and computerized material so as to offer our students effective visual back-up to the theoretical aspect. Internet will also be called on for certain adjuncts to the course work and the Institute website extensively used for regular and original monitoring of the courses given. This has direct advantages for students learning French.
Tutorials and personal monitoring: A notable feature of the teaching offered by the Institute lies in its tutorial system. It implies teaching in small groups (10 students per group), and in the personalized monitoring given to each student, who is thereby able to take advantage of appropriate advice and guidance relating to a foreign student’s life in Paris and to university orientation.
